We need to Fix 440

We need to Fix 440

Interstate 440 - the Raleigh Beltline freeway - is a vital corridor for commerce and commuting.

Unfortunately, the section between Wade Avenue and Cary is substandard compared to the rest of Beltline, with narrower lanes and shoulders and short off/on-ramps, and its high crash rates are not surprising.

Fortunately, NCDOT has a plan to Fix 440.

With the proposed improvements for 440, rush hour travel speeds are projected to be higher and more reliable – around 25 mph higher than without them in the eastbound direction. Westbound not as comparatively high but still better than without improvements.

Plus, NCDOT is still working to minimize the future footprint of this urban freeway. It need to work for both its travelers and its neighbors.

The bottom line is that we do need to fix 440. In fact, it probably should have been rebuilt a while ago, but state transportation funding was not available for this section until now.

The regional business community supports the effort to Fix 440 as our top congestion relief priority for the Triangle area.
